This exhibition gives you a chance to have a short exper ience of what it is to function with limited vision. We will bring the world of blindness closer to you, so that you can feel for a few minutes the obstacles that people with limited vision face.
To do this, you will put on special glasses and go through our interactive exhibition; it will only take 3 to five minutes.
According to information of the World Healt h Organisation (WHO) there are 37 million blind people and over 124 million people with low vision, comprising a total of over 161 million people with visual impairment in our world today. Every 5 seconds one person in the world goes blind, and a child goes blind every minute. 75% of all blindness is avoidable, either preventable or treatable. 90% of all avoidable blindness occurs in the developing countries. According to estimates, most blind people live in India: 9 million. 7 million live in Africa and 6 million in China.
VISION 2020: The Right to Sight is a global initiative which aims to help eliminate avoidable blindness by the year 2020. Christian Blind Mission is a founding member of VISION 2020. Within this world-wide campaign, CBM concentrates on performing cataract operations, the control of eye infections especially trachoma and the prevention of childhood blindness as well as training for eye care personnel. CBM is also lobbying at a policy level to ensure that blindness prevention is given priority in the health policies of developing countries as well as being included as an important component of poverty alleviation in the development agenda of donor countries. |
